School Is Cool - Aloha Friday Challenge

Hi crafty friends. I hope you’ve found time to spend on something crafty this month.

I’m posting a card today as a design team member for the Aloha Friday Challenge.  Click on the link to go to their page and see all of the crafty inspiration posted by the talented team.

The theme this month is school/books.  As soon as I saw the theme for this month, I knew immediately which stamp set I wanted to use… “School Is Cool” by My Favorite Things.

I stamped the images I wanted to use on a cardstock that is new to me for Copic coloring.  It’s called Neenah Classic Crest Cover, Solar White, 80#, Super Smooth.  I saw a video where Dawn from W Plus 9 did some Copic coloring on this cardstock.  I love all of her creations, so I gave it a try.

Thinking maybe this would improve my coloring results, I purchased a reem from Amazon.com.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t super impressed with the results.  Don’t get me wrong, the paper is great.  It is a welcome addition to my crafty stash.  I don’t think I will be using it to color stamped images with Copic markers though.

The paper is very smooth and bright white.  It’s only 80# paper so I did have some bleeding out of the lines when I put down multiple layers.

I need to do some more tests with this paper before I give my detailed review of it.

I would like to try it with hot foiling and coloring of die-cut images.

As far as a paper for coloring stamped images, I’m going to stick with my two favorites: Hammermill 100# and Spectrum Noir Ultra Premium White Cardstock (100 bright/100#).

As for the card I’ve created, I’ve listed all of the supplies I used below.

Thank you for stopping by my blog.  If you haven’t signed up for my newsletter yet, head over to www.cardsbyshannonlee.com.  As a subscriber to my newsletter, you will be entered into my monthly drawing for a bundle of craft supplies.

Since the holidays are creeping up on us, I’ve decided to do a drawing every Saturday in September.  I usually only draw a winner on the last Saturday of the month.  My giveaway stash has lots of new products.  I know that will come in handy for those of you who make their own Christmas cards.

Be on the lookout for the winner notification email.  My crafty community is small but sweet.  The chances of you winning one of the free bundles is very great.

Bye for now and good luck!

-Shannon

Tropical Island Getaway Card

Hello, crafty friends.

This is Shannon Lee Smith with cardsbyshannonlee.com.

Today I have a card I’ve created with products from Kat Scrappiness for the Aloha Friday Challenge Design Team.

I started by die-cutting the palm tree layers, island, and coconuts from white cardstock.  I color those elements with Copic markers.

Next, I use the Teal Glitter 6x6 paper pad and die cut the water with the Stitched Waves dies.  I had to cut two sections because the paper comes in a 6x6 inch pad, but I made a slimline card.  I glued the sections side by side and covered the seam with the palm tree so it would not be noticeable.

Then I cut a slimline card panel and die ink blending of a sunset using dye inks by Lawn Fawn.  I used the following colors: Peachy Keen, Peach Fuzz, Apricot, and Butter to create the beautiful orange/coral sunset.

Finally, I die-cut two of the Stitched Dolphins and used a blending brush to add Hippo dye ink from Lawn Fawn.  I made the edges of the dolphins darker than the center to create some interest.

I added a foiled sentiment I had on hand and included some Cantaloupe Pearls to finish this Tropical Island Getaway card.

I just love all the stitched detail on the die-cut waves and dolphins.  It really makes them stand out.

If you’d like to join my email list, I will inform you of my next blog posts and YouTube videos.  As a subscriber to my email list, you will also be entered into my monthly drawing for a free bundle of craft supplies.  If you live in the U.S., there is no charge for delivery if you are chosen as the winner of our monthly drawing. If your name is chosen, you will receive an email notification informing you that you won.  You must respond to this notification within seven days, providing me with your mailing address.  If you don’t respond within seven days, you will forfeit your prize and we will do another drawing.

I’ve included a list of the Kat Scrappiness products I’ve used below.

Dragon Happy Digi Stamp by TLC Designs - Handmade / DIY Greeting Card

Here is a card that I made with the Dragon Happy Digi stamp by TLC Designs. I colored the image with Copic markers: YG23, YG25, BG49, BG57, BG45, and BG53.
I also used the daisy from the Daisy frames die set, also by TLC Designs. I also colored that with copic markers: yg17, yg03, yg01, c00, y18, 15, y13, and y11.
For the background I used the Aztec Sunshine die set for the sun and the Land And Sea Dies for the grass and hillside. All are from TLC Designs. I ink-blended the grass and hillside with Catherine Pooler Inks: Eucalyptus and Sage.
For the cloudy sky, I used a stencil from My Favorite Things called rolling hills and Salvaged Patina Distress Oxide Ink.
I added a small border on the top and bottom of the card with Metallic cardstock in Holographic by lawn fawn.
For the sentiment, I used the Must Haves Sentiments Stamp Set from TLC Designs. I stamped "thinking of you" in Versamark ink after treating my paper with an anti-static powder tool. Then I covered the stamped image with WOW Superfine Opaque White Embossing Powder. I heat set that with my Wagner Heat Tool on setting 2 until the embossing powder melted.
I added the panel to a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" white, side folding note card.
And voila, super cute dragon card! (the dragon is super cute... I'm not presuming that my card is super cute...lol)
